Kevin Holland believes that a more measured fight schedule and commitment to the welterweight division could be beneficial for his long-term career.
Returning to the 170-pound weight class at UFC London, Holland effectively neutralized Gunnar Nelson`s offensive attempts and landed a powerful knockdown in the first round, almost securing a finish. Despite Nelson`s late submission attempt, Holland`s superior skills prevailed, allowing him to dominate until the fight concluded.
All three judges scored the fight 29-28 in favor of Holland, marking a successful comeback after two previous losses in the middleweight division.
“I wasn’t certain how the decision would go. Gunnar is incredibly tough,” Holland admitted post-fight. “People often underestimate my grappling abilities, but I can grapple effectively, especially against opponents who aren`t significantly heavier than me.”
“Welterweight suits me well athletically. If a fight at 170 pounds is offered, sometime around July would be ideal. If it’s at 185 pounds, I’m ready to fight as early as next week.”
Initially, Holland aimed to maintain distance and utilize his striking, but Nelson managed to close the gap and secure a takedown. While on his back, Holland attempted several submissions, including an omo plata, but Nelson defended methodically and escaped to implement his grappling expertise.
Holland proved effective from the bottom position before creating space and landing a straight punch that heavily dropped Nelson. Holland followed up with strikes from top position, seeking a finish, and landed a significant blow just as the round ended.
After a minute break, Nelson urgently tried to bring the fight back to the ground, but Holland focused on staying upright. Nelson eventually succeeded in taking the fight to the canvas, but struggled to generate offense, with Holland even landing strikes from his back.
Upon returning to their feet, Nelson again sought a takedown, while Holland countered with knees. Nelson managed to get Holland down once more and transitioned to an arm-triangle choke.
However, Holland successfully resisted and escaped, returning to his feet where he began to punish the renowned grappler with strikes. Nelson was forced into a defensive posture to prevent Holland from creating space, allowing him to survive to the end of the fight, but Holland`s victory was evident.
Although Holland has experienced mixed results at welterweight, he has appeared to be a more formidable competitor in this weight class. It remains to be seen whether he will remain at welterweight or return to middleweight for a more active fight schedule.
