UFC President Dana White has indicated that the highly anticipated fight between Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall is nearing confirmation.
In a recent interview, White stated, “The fight is going to happen. It’s now just about finalizing the agreement and getting it officially signed. It will happen.”
Jones versus Aspinall is considered the most significant matchup the UFC can currently arrange for the undisputed heavyweight championship.
White reiterated the progress, saying, “It’s going to happen. It’s essentially agreed upon, but not fully finalized to the point where we can announce the date. However, the fight is definitely on. We just need to get the contracts signed.”
Aspinall last competed in July, securing a victory over Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304 to defend his interim heavyweight title. Jones’s last fight was in November at UFC 309, where he defeated Stipe Miocic to retain his heavyweight title.
White emphasized the magnitude of the event, “My team and I believe this is potentially the biggest heavyweight fight we’ve ever put together. When we finalize and announce this fight, and build up to it, it will be the biggest heavyweight fight in UFC history.”
Aspinall has expressed impatience with the delay in finalizing the fight, urging Jones to commit to the bout or retire.
Aspinall commented on Jones’s options, “Jon has nowhere else to go. He must either fight me or retire now. And if he chooses to retire, it will be clear to everyone that he was avoiding this fight. There is simply no other logical fight for Jon at this moment. So, it all works out well.”
