Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall Defer to UFC for Fight Announcement

MMA news

While they may often find themselves in disagreement, Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall are aligned on one key point: they will allow the UFC to be the sole party making official announcements regarding their potential bout.

Jones, currently in Thailand for a reality show filming, conducted a seminar over the past weekend. During the session, he was asked about the timeline for the highly anticipated heavyweight title unification fight against Aspinall. Jones had previously indicated that the UFC is aware of his future plans, which might explain why the promotion has remained silent on calls for him to be stripped of his title.

It has only been six months since Jon Jones last competed, and it appears he has been in discussions with the UFC regarding his potential return date.

“The UFC, I and Tom, we all got a lot of stuff happening behind the scenes,” Jones informed the seminar attendees. “They’re one of the biggest organizations in sports and right now Tom and I have agreed to wait for the UFC to make their announcements. So I legally can’t really talk about it.”

Aspinall echoed a similar sentiment recently after teasing potential news on social media. He subsequently clarified, quite firmly, that he does not announce his own fights and leaves that responsibility entirely to the UFC.

For several weeks now, Jones and Aspinall have been engaging in public back-and-forth exchanges through various interviews and social media posts, fueled by growing frustration over the lack of concrete information about their potential showdown.

UFC CEO Dana White has repeatedly given assurances that the fight will indeed happen. However, Aspinall has frequently expressed his impatience as he approaches a full year of inactivity, with his last victory dating back to July 2024.

This recent statement from Jones doesn`t provide definitive answers either. Nevertheless, it suggests he is actively communicating with the UFC and acknowledges that the matchup against Aspinall is widely considered the fight everyone wants to witness.

Will the fight actually materialize? Only future developments and the UFC`s decisions will ultimately reveal the answer.
