China`s own Zhang Mingyang is set to receive headline treatment for the upcoming UFC event in Shanghai.
UFC CEO Dana White recently made the official announcement that the promotion will return to Shanghai, China, on Friday, August 23rd. The event is scheduled to take place at the Shanghai Indoor Stadium and will be topped by a light heavyweight clash between local favorite Zhang Mingyang and Brazilian contender Johnny Walker.
Known by his moniker “The Mountain Tiger,” Zhang made his debut in the Ultimate Fighting Championship last year and has rapidly impressed the fight world. He has secured three consecutive victories, all by first-round knockout, earning a Performance of the Night bonus for each finish. His most recent devastating win came against Anthony Smith in April.
Conversely, Johnny Walker enters this main event looking to snap a two-fight skid. He has suffered finishes in both of his outings thus far in 2024. Walker was also previously slated to compete against Azamat Murzakanov at UFC 316 but was forced to withdraw from that bout due to an injury.
The co-main event for the highly anticipated Shanghai card features a intriguing matchup in the featherweight division. Former UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling is scheduled to face off against two-time featherweight title challenger Brian Ortega. Sterling is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Movsar Evloev at UFC 310, while Ortega also dropped a unanimous decision in his last appearance against Diego Lopes at UFC 306.
