Joe Pyfer Blames Illness for UFC Mexico Withdrawal, Vows Never to Return

MMA news

Joe Pyfer has given more details about why he had to pull out of his fight against Kelvin Gastelum at UFC Mexico. He also made it clear that due to this experience, he will never fight in Mexico again, and doesn`t want to visit the country at all.

Pyfer expressed strong negative feelings on his Instagram, saying he doesn`t care if it`s offensive, but he will never go back to Mexico. He explained he took all precautions, including sleeping in a tent to prepare for the altitude, but still got sick.

He addressed suggestions that it might have been altitude sickness, stating he is not an expert on geography or elevation. However, he followed advice to acclimate for two months, including sleeping in a tent on the floor. If this is the effect of altitude, he is done with Mexico, using harsh language to describe the country and reiterating he won`t return.

Pyfer dismissed concerns about his strong words being offensive, telling critics they are not the ones fighting and using an offensive phrase.

The UFC announced Pyfer`s withdrawal due to illness just hours before the event. Pyfer explained that he woke up on Saturday feeling unwell after a team dinner the previous night and realized fighting Gastelum was not wise.

He recounted eating at a place that was supposedly safe, but a few hours later, he experienced severe diarrhea. He estimates he went to the bathroom at least 10 or 11 times and lost around 15 pounds, going from 209 to about 194 pounds.

Pyfer stated that both he and the doctor agreed it was not smart to fight in his condition. He emphasized he had to prioritize his health, even if it disappointed some people.

Gastelum was returning to the middleweight division and was initially considered a significant underdog, although betting odds shifted closer as the fight approached.

While Gastelum has hinted at positive news soon, Pyfer hopes the UFC will reschedule the fight with him.

Pyfer stated his belief that he will defeat Gastelum when they eventually fight, if Gastelum agrees to rebook the match. He expressed feeling bad for Gastelum for not being able to earn his fight money and hopes the UFC will compensate him. He clarified it was never his intention to let anyone down.

Pyfer concluded by saying they both deserve the fight as it is an exciting matchup. He apologized to his fans who were looking forward to watching him, stating he was in peak condition and eager to fight.
