Jason Robertson Trade Scenarios and Minnesota Wild Forward Targets

NHL news

The Dallas Stars face a crucial decision regarding their pending RFA, Jason Robertson. To secure his future with the team, they need to create salary cap space. If a long-term, high-value contract for Robertson isn’t feasible, the Stars might consider trading him. Two primary trade avenues exist: acquiring an established player of similar caliber, such as a Brady Tkachuk, Dylan Larkin, William Nylander, or Robert Thomas, although these players may not be available or could command a steep price. Alternatively, the Stars could pursue a package deal involving a young, high-potential player and draft picks, akin to the Mikko Rantanen trade. However, this approach carries more risk for a Stars team aiming for immediate success, as prospects like Matthew Knies or Mason McTavish might not offer the same immediate impact as Robertson.

Regardless of Robertson’s future, the Stars will likely need to move salary to manage their cap situation.

Meanwhile, the Minnesota Wild are actively exploring forward trade options. Their available trade assets include promising prospects like Jesper Wallstedt, Danila Yurov, Bobby Brink, Daemon Hunt, Charlie Stramel, Hunter Haight, Riley Heidt, and Adam Benak, along with future first-round picks. Certain players, such as Ryan Hartman, Joel Eriksson Ek, and Jared Spurgeon, possess no-trade clauses that limit their movement. Marcus Foligno and Jake Middleton have similar protections that become more restrictive on July 1st, while Jonas Brodin, Nico Sturm, and Yakov Trenin have no such clauses.

Acquiring top-six centers or wingers is a challenging endeavor, and the Wild are unwilling to part with core players like Brock Faber, Matt Boldy, or Kirill Kaprizov. Among the forwards the Wild might consider reaching out to are Auston Matthews (Maple Leafs), who could potentially be acquired if the Leafs are interested in Jesper Wallstedt. The Wild could also explore acquiring Jack Hughes or Nico Hischier from the Devils, though trading Jack Hughes seems unlikely. Nico Hischier’s future with the Devils, especially if an extension is uncertain, might present an opportunity. Dylan Larkin of the Red Wings, with his long-term contract and potential desire for a change of scenery, is another possibility. Robert Thomas of the Blues, whom the Wild reportedly pursued, remains a target, though the Blues previously rejected a significant offer. Brady Tkachuk of the Senators, a dynamic winger, could also be a consideration. Finally, Vincent Trocheck of the Rangers, with years remaining on his contract, might be available, though his acquisition cost could be high, and the Wild may be hesitant to include Wallstedt in a deal for him.
