UFC welterweight fighter Ian Machado Garry is sure he will end the buzz surrounding Carlos Prates when they meet at UFC Kansas City.
Known as “The Future,” Garry will headline the event on April 26 against the rapidly rising contender Carlos Prates in a welterweight match. Prates has had a remarkable start in the UFC, winning his first four fights by knockout, each earning him a Performance of the Night bonus. He boasts an 11-fight winning streak leading up to his fight with Garry, who is ranked No. 6.
However, Garry is not impressed. In a recent video clip, Garry is seen analyzing one of Prates` previous defeats, labeling him a “quitter.”
“This video shows the true fighting spirit of Carlos Prates,” Garry stated. “It’s called being a quitter.”
“He had been dominated in the previous rounds,” Garry continued. “He raises his hand, shakes his head, says, ‘I’m done,’ and then collapses to the ground in despair because he knows deep down he isn`t a true fighter.”
The fight Garry is referring to is Prates` loss to Mikhail Romanchuk in January 2017 at an event in China.
Garry mistakenly mentions “rounds prior” as the fight concluded just over two minutes into the first round. Nevertheless, the fight went badly for Prates. Romanchuk aggressively attacked from the start, keeping Prates on the defensive throughout. A series of heavy punches against the cage led to the TKO finish.
After that defeat, Prates went on to win 14 of his next 15 fights, with only one decided by judges` scorecards. It`s worth noting that five of Prates’ six career losses have been by knockout or submission in the first round. His recent victories include wins against veterans Neil Magny and Li Jingliang, and this upcoming fight is Prates` first chance to break into the top 10 of the highly competitive welterweight division.
Garry, with a record of 15-1, is coming off the first loss of his professional career. He stepped in on short notice to fight undefeated contender Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 310 this past December, losing by unanimous decision after a competitive three-round fight. Before that, Garry had won his first eight UFC bouts.
Update: Prates recently responded on Instagram:
“We’re training here, while Ian Garry is talking trash online. You have too much free time… On the 26th, I’ll punch him in the mouth… A**hole,” Prates said.
