Hockey Community Supports Mark Scheifele After Father’s Passing

NHL news

The hockey community has come together to support Winnipeg Jets center Mark Scheifele following the unexpected death of his father, Brad Scheifele. His father passed away suddenly the night before the Jets` crucial second-round playoff game against the Dallas Stars. In response to the news, fans and supporters have made significant charitable contributions in his father`s memory.

Despite the immense personal tragedy, Mark Scheifele chose to play in Game 6 on Saturday as his team faced elimination from the playoffs. He scored the Jets` only goal in the game, which they ultimately lost to the Stars 2-1 in overtime, concluding their playoff run. After the game, players from both the Jets and Stars demonstrated profound support for Scheifele during the traditional handshake line.

In a widespread show of tribute, many individuals opted to donate $55 – corresponding to Scheifele`s jersey number – to the True North Youth Foundation, the charitable arm of the Winnipeg Jets organization. Krista Sinaisky, a spokesperson for True North Sports + Entertainment, confirmed the remarkable generosity, reporting that over $30,000 has been raised specifically through these $55 donations. She stated, “A wonderful outpouring of support from the hockey community on a very tough day for the Jets family, our True North Youth Foundation is extremely grateful.”

Donations have also been directed to KidSport Canada, another organization that Scheifele supports. This charitable effort has seen participation not only from Jets fans but also from Dallas Stars supporters, highlighting a spirit of goodwill and recognition of Scheifele`s courage in the face of adversity.

Dallas Stars coach Peter DeBoer acknowledged Scheifele`s difficult situation and performance after the game, saying, “Just courageous what he did tonight. I`m sure his dad would`ve been really proud of him and what he did, and I`m sure his dad would`ve wanted him there. Tough night for him and anybody in the hockey world that has been in a situation like that. Hats off to him. A courageous young man.”

With the Winnipeg Jets` season now finished, general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff stated that the organization is committed to providing Mark Scheifele with their full support.
