Leon Edwards is singularly focused on defeating Sean Brady at UFC London, recognizing the significant impact a decisive victory could have on his title aspirations.
Edwards returns to the Octagon after losing his welterweight title to Belal Muhammad last July. He is highly motivated to reclaim the championship, attributing his previous performance to the unusual fight time in England and lingering injuries.
Determined to leave no doubt, Edwards is aiming for a dominant performance against Brady to expedite his path back to a title opportunity.
“My focus is absolutely on securing the title,” Edwards stated. “Right now, it’s all about Sean Brady this weekend. After that, the target is the championship. That’s my sole aim.”
Initially scheduled to face Jack Della Maddalena, Edwards` opponent was changed after Della Maddalena was tapped for a title fight against Muhammad due to Shavkat Rakhmonov`s injury.
While Rakhmonov`s return timeline is uncertain, Edwards understands the UFC`s dynamic nature, where timing and seizing opportunities are crucial. A resounding victory over Brady could propel him ahead in the title contention.
“I truly believe everything is aligning,” Edwards commented. “It feels like fate is guiding me back to my belt. But it all hinges on Saturday night. I need to perform and then assess what comes next.”
Edwards is hesitant to plan beyond the Brady fight. However, he is prepared to remain ready for May, should Della Maddalena encounter any unforeseen issues.
“In this sport, anything can happen,” Edwards acknowledged. “Injuries are common, things change quickly. Staying prepared is essential to capitalize on any opportunities.”
Rakhmonov`s unavailability in May presents Edwards with a clear chance to surpass him in the rankings with a strong showing against Brady. Despite Rakhmonov`s prior reputation, his recent victory against Ian Machado Garry was unexpectedly competitive. Garry demonstrated resilience, lasting the full five rounds and even threatening a late submission against Rakhmonov, who previously boasted a perfect finishing record.
Edwards, known for embracing challenges, was not averse to facing Rakhmonov. However, the Garry fight provided him with valuable insights into potential strategies for a future matchup.
“Honestly, the Rakhmonov vs. Garry fight wasn’t as thrilling as anticipated,” Edwards remarked. “Considering Rakhmonov`s hype as this dominant force, it turned out to be just an average fight. Not the explosive showdown everyone expected.”
“Perhaps their past training together contributed to a more cautious approach. But the fight revealed vulnerabilities in both Rakhmonov’s and Garry’s games, which became apparent.”
While eager to contend for the title and face other top welterweights, Edwards prioritizes his immediate focus on Brady.
He hopes Brady will engage in an exciting fight, believing their styles will create opportunities for a spectacular finish in front of his home crowd.
“I anticipate Sean will engage,” Edwards stated. “He’ll provide openings for a finish, and that’s what I’m aiming for. I want to go out there, secure a finish, and reaffirm my position as the best welterweight in the division.”
“Based on his fighting style, I foresee numerous opportunities to inflict damage, and I’m ready to capitalize on them.”
