Tom Gazzola discussed the likely end of defenseman Darnell Nurse’s tenure with the Edmonton Oilers during an appearance on Sirius XM NHL Network Radio’s TFP Hotstove. He suggested that the relationship had been deteriorating for some time.
Gazzola recalled Nurse’s early career as being more lighthearted and approachable. However, he believes that after signing a significant contract and experiencing initial struggles that put him under intense scrutiny from fans and media in a high-pressure market like Edmonton, his demeanor began to change. This pressure, Gazzola posited, may have eventually led to a breaking point.
He speculated that a realization may have dawned on Nurse, especially after the past season, that the team’s championship aspirations with the current core might not materialize. This sentiment, coupled with a desire for a fresh start, could have prompted his request to move on.
While acknowledging the harshness of fan criticism towards prominent players, Gazzola defended Nurse’s capabilities, describing him as a serviceable defenseman with skill and strong skating when he’s “dialed in.” He added that Nurse is still in his prime and expressed hope that the Oilers’ management can secure a decent return in a trade while maintaining cap flexibility, noting that recent moves have unnecessarily depleted their cap space.
With Nurse’s trade request now a reality, his future destination is a subject of speculation. Reports suggest he prefers a move to the Eastern Conference and is not keen on joining the Toronto Maple Leafs. There have been discussions between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Oilers regarding Nurse, hinting at the possibility of another trade between the two franchises. It remains to be seen if Nurse can thrive in a new system, much like K’Andre Miller did, but the time for him and the Edmonton Oilers to part ways appears to have arrived.
