Dana White Confirms Ian Machado Garry as Backup for UFC 315 Title Fight

MMA news

UFC CEO Dana White has officially confirmed that welterweight contender Ian Machado Garry will serve as the backup fighter for the upcoming championship bout at UFC 315. The title fight, scheduled for May 10th in Canada, features reigning champion Belal Muhammad defending his belt against challenger Jack Della Maddalena.

Garry himself first revealed his potential backup role shortly after securing a victory over Carlos Prates in the main event of UFC Kansas City. Following his win, he stated his plan to travel to Montreal next month, make weight, and be prepared to step into the title fight should either main event participant become unable to compete.

During his post-fight interview inside the octagon, Garry emphatically declared his readiness and position:

“In two weeks’ time, I’m flying to Canada. I’m the official backup for the world title fight, and I’m next in line for that world title!”

When questioned about Garry`s statement during the UFC Kansas City post-fight press conference, Dana White validated the information, confirming it was indeed “official.”

White also offered praise for Garry`s willingness to take fights on short notice, noting, “Credit to Ian, takes these fights on short notice… He’ll fight anybody. He looked good tonight.”

Belal Muhammad is set for his first defense of the 170-pound title since claiming it from Leon Edwards in July 2024. His opponent, Jack Della Maddalena, enters the high-stakes contest riding a remarkable 17-fight winning streak, with seven of those victories coming under the UFC banner.

Ian Machado Garry recently rebounded from the sole loss of his professional career, a short-notice decision defeat to Shavkat Rakhmonov last December. Prior to that bout, the Irish fighter had compiled an impressive record of eight consecutive wins within the UFC. His recent decision win over Carlos Prates puts him back in the win column and solidifies his standing near the top of the welterweight division.
