Conor McGregor Eyes Irish Presidency, Experts Doubt Success

MMA news

Conor McGregor, the famous UFC fighter, has announced his plans to run for President of Ireland. This announcement came after he met with former U.S. President Donald Trump during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the United States. McGregor has been vocal about immigration issues in Ireland, a topic also important to Trump’s political views.

McGregor declared his presidential intentions on social media, urging Irish citizens to vote for him to “SAVE IRELAND TOGETHER!” He elaborated on his plans, particularly focusing on his opposition to the EU Migration and Asylum Pact, a European framework for managing migration and asylum.

He stated that Ireland is required to fully implement this EU pact by June 12, 2026, necessitating new legislation. McGregor positioned himself as the only presidential candidate who would oppose this pact, promising to put it to a referendum, allowing the Irish people to decide directly. He also expressed a desire to hear government officials defend their support for the pact in public debates.

It’s important to note that the President of Ireland’s role is primarily symbolic and ceremonial. Political science professor Gail McElroy from Trinity College Dublin has stated that McGregor has “close to zero” chance of being elected. She explained that there are significant hurdles to even get on the ballot, requiring nominations from either 20 members of the Irish parliament or four local city or county councils. McElroy believes it’s “inconceivable” that McGregor would receive the necessary endorsements, considering his controversial public image in Ireland.

Adding to his challenges, McGregor was found liable for sexual assault in a civil case in November 2024, following allegations dating back to 2018. He has appealed this verdict. Furthermore, several businesses, including his own whiskey brand, have distanced themselves from McGregor after the verdict.

In conclusion, while Conor McGregor is determined to pursue the Irish presidency, he faces a very difficult path to even become a candidate, let alone win the election.
