Sir Andy Murray sent a message to tennis organizers urging them to improve, after Coco Gauff revealed just how much smaller the actual French Open trophy she gets to keep is.
Gauff, 21, clinched the Roland-Garros title on Saturday in Paris, defeating Aryna Sabalenka with a score of 6-7, 6-2, 6-4. Her victory made her the first American woman to win the French Open singles crown in a decade, following Serena Williams` achievement.
The World No. 2 celebrated her 10th career title passionately with the prestigious main trophy in front of the French crowd. However, she wouldn`t be taking that particular trophy home.
The tennis star later posted a video from her private jet, unveiling the actual trophy she receives and demonstrating its significantly smaller size.
On TikTok, Gauff gestured to a picture of herself holding the larger replica and explained: “This is the trophy that you guys see, the one that we take pictures with, do press with and all that.”
She clarified: “But, actually, we don`t get to take this home. This stays with the tournament.”
Gauff then displayed the much smaller trophy, adding: “This is the one we take home. It`s like a mini replica of the trophy. It`s… Really small.”
The Florida native surprised viewers further by placing the trophy next to a small Perrier bottle, showing that the esteemed award was only slightly larger than the beverage container.
Gauff concluded: “That`s how small it is. But, you know, it`s the memories that matter the most.”
This revelation prompted the 38-year-old Murray to express his surprise and comment on the situation via social media.
The former World No. 1 shared a clip on his Instagram story where late-night talk show host Jimmy Fallon praised Gauff.
Murray added his own remark in a subsequent post: “Surely the tennis majors can do a better job with the replica trophies!? They are tiny.”
The British tennis great is well-acquainted with major championship trophies, having won one himself in 2016.
