Alex Ovechkin is just one goal away from surpassing Wayne Gretzky to become the NHL`s all-time leading scorer. Ovechkin matched Gretzky`s record with two goals on Friday, and his next chance to make history will be on Sunday against the New York Islanders.
Ovechkin is coming off an impressive two-goal performance against the Blackhawks at Capital One Arena. While he could have broken Gretzky`s record with a hat trick goal into an empty net, he chose not to, wanting to achieve the milestone with a goalie in net. Hockey fans are eagerly anticipating Ovechkin`s game against the Islanders.
`He wants to break the record with a goalie in the net, which I respect,` said Capitals coach Spencer Carbery after Friday`s game. `He didn`t want to go for the empty net goal. He told me that on the bench, and I wanted to confirm he didn`t want to go back out.`
With six games left in the Capitals` season, Ovechkin has plenty of opportunities to break the record before the season ends. Even at 39, Ovechkin is scoring at a high rate. His first goal on Friday marked his 14th 40-goal season, surpassing Gretzky for the most ever.
Fans hoping to witness history will be pleased to know Ovechkin has a strong scoring record against the Islanders. In 71 games against them, Ovechkin has scored 44 goals, making them the eighth-most scored against any team.
