Former UFC champion Cain Velasquez is currently imprisoned after pleading no contest to several charges, including attempted murder, stemming from a 2022 car chase incident. He now faces a restitution hearing to decide financial compensation for the victims.
At a recent court hearing, Velasquez was not present, but his lawyer, Renee Hessling, addressed the issue of restitution. The hearing was postponed to June 3rd to allow more time to resolve disagreements over the amount of money being requested by the victims.
Hessling stated in court that the victims are seeking a very large sum of money, which the defense considers unreasonable. They plan to challenge this amount in court if necessary.
California law mandates that crime victims receive restitution from convicted individuals. However, the exact amount Velasquez will have to pay is still under debate.
Velasquez`s prison sentence followed an 11-mile high-speed chase after Harry Goularte, who was accused of molesting Velasquez`s son. Velasquez shot at the car, injuring Goularte`s stepfather, Paul Bender.
Goularte is facing separate charges, and Velasquez`s family has also filed a civil lawsuit against Goularte and his mother`s daycare.
Regarding the restitution hearing, Hessling indicated she needs more information from the victims before reaching an agreement on the final amount.
Hessling acknowledged Velasquez owes restitution but contested claims, including a million-dollar demand related to daycare. She hopes to agree on some points and narrow down the disputed issues.
Prosecutor Aaron French mentioned that the victims have hired their own attorney and are hoping for a quick resolution.
Judge Elizabeth C. Peterson scheduled the next court date for June 3rd, where a date for the restitution hearing is expected to be set.
Velasquez is serving his sentence at Wasco State Prison and could be eligible for parole in March 2026.
