Cain Velasquez now knows his fate: he has been sentenced to prison, a term shorter than what prosecutors initially sought.
The former UFC heavyweight champion was sentenced on Monday to five years in prison. This sentencing follows his no-contest plea in April to multiple charges arising from his 2022 arrest. The charges included attempted premeditated murder, felony assault, and various firearm offenses.
The 2022 arrest occurred after Velasquez engaged in a high-speed chase targeting a car carrying Harry Goularte, who was accused of sexually assaulting Velasquez`s son at a daycare run by Goularte`s mother. During the chase, Velasquez fired shots from a .40 caliber handgun, injuring Goularte`s stepfather, Paul Bender, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries to his arm. Prosecutors had requested a sentence of 30 years to life for Velasquez.
The court has credited Velasquez for the time he has already served in custody.
