Brandon Moreno, the former flyweight champion, delivered a strong striking performance in front of his Mexican fans, defeating Steve Erceg in the UFC Mexico main event. Over five rounds, Moreno demonstrated superior stand-up skills to secure a unanimous decision.
While the fight wasn`t completely one-sided, Moreno consistently outworked and outstruck Erceg, earning him the advantage on the judges` scorecards. After a mixed record in previous Mexico City appearances, Moreno left no doubt this time, claiming a clear victory.
All judges scored the fight 49-46 in favor of Moreno, marking his second consecutive win after a period of losses. Looking ahead, Moreno expressed interest in competing at UFC 320, the next Noche UFC event scheduled for September 13th in Mexico.
“I’ve been through so much to be here. I know how difficult it is for many of you to get tickets. This victory is for you all,” Moreno told the enthusiastic crowd.
Moreno also addressed UFC management, suggesting a pay-per-view event in Guadalajara, indicating his confidence in his drawing power.
Although not his most flawless performance, Moreno did what was necessary to win. Erceg may regret missed opportunities, as minor errors potentially cost him the fight.
Erceg acknowledged Moreno`s performance, stating, “I thought I landed well, but it wasn’t enough. I went the distance, and I will continue to improve and come back stronger.”
The fight was predominantly a striking battle, with Moreno aiming for a knockout and landing various punches and combinations. He stunned Erceg in the first round, but Erceg recovered and continued to compete.
Despite absorbing more strikes, Erceg showed resilience, landing straight punches and uppercuts when Moreno moved forward. He also attempted to use straight kicks to maintain distance.
Moreno maintained pressure, seeking to land powerful punches with speed, making it difficult for Erceg to evade. While Moreno didn`t string together many combinations, his speed was a key factor.
Erceg seemed to anticipate some of Moreno`s attacks but struggled to create effective counters. Moreno then closed the distance, attempting takedowns and maintaining a lead on points.
In the final moments, Moreno utilized his left jab and overhand right, which had been effective throughout the fight. Even when not landing cleanly, Moreno`s power kept Erceg defensive.
Moreno also landed a late head kick, exciting the crowd. Ultimately, Moreno`s consistent output and Erceg`s inability to match it secured Moreno`s victory by decision.
Given Moreno`s former champion status and popularity in Mexico, it is likely his request to fight at UFC 320 will be granted. The question remains who he will face, with numerous top flyweights available for a prominent spot on the pay-per-view card.
