Ben Askren is uncertain about Sean O’Malley’s decision to immediately rematch Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 316. While acknowledging O’Malley`s potential to win, Askren wonders if this is the right move for his career at this moment.
Dvalishvili defeated O’Malley to win the title by unanimous decision at UFC 306 in September. They are now set to face each other again on June 7 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
Askren suggests that O’Malley might have benefited from taking a fight against a different opponent before facing the dominant Dvalishvili again.
“I think this might be a bad move,” Askren commented on a podcast with Daniel Cormier. He elaborated that if Dvalishvili defeats O’Malley decisively a second time, it could significantly diminish O’Malley’s appeal. Fans might be less interested in a third fight unless Dvalishvili loses the championship to someone else first.
Askren proposed that O’Malley could have instead fought against lower-ranked fighters, particularly those less skilled in takedowns. Against such opponents, O’Malley’s exciting and diverse striking skills could have been highlighted, rebuilding anticipation for bigger fights. However, with an immediate rematch after a clear loss, Askren feels many are questioning the necessity of seeing the fight again.
O’Malley has stated that he has made significant life adjustments since losing the title to Dvalishvili, including stepping away from social media. He believes these changes have placed him in a much better physical and mental state as he prepares for his fourth UFC championship fight.
Dvalishvili’s successful pressure and wrestling were key factors in their first match. Because of this, Askren believes O’Malley should have used more time to concentrate on improving his wrestling defense.
“I wish Sean had spent more time improving his wrestling,” Askren stated, while also recognizing O’Malley’s strengths: “He has dynamic striking, he has knockout power.” Askren concluded by noting Dvalishvili’s recent dominance, describing him as “relatively unstoppable” in his recent fights.
