Grigor Dimitrov had a hilariously awkward encounter with fans before the Miami Open.
The 33-year-old Bulgarian tennis star participated in a Miami Open social media event, where players rode a cable car over Hard Rock Stadium with two fans each.
During the ride, two female fans asked Dimitrov which tennis player he would most like to marry.
The former world No.3 responded with a laugh: “Marry? You`re putting me on the spot here.”
The fans playfully persisted, pointing out, “You didn`t answer the question.”
Dimitrov then joked, “Yeah, because I`m not ready for marriage.”
Changing the subject, Dimitrov turned the question to the fans: “Who do you think would be a good fit for me to go for dinner with? Let`s see that.”
One of the fans suggested, “My favorite tennis player is Maria Sharapova, so maybe…”
At this moment, Dimitrov revealed, “She was my ex-girlfriend.”
The fan immediately responded, “Actually? Sorry to bring that up.”
Dimitrov, taking it in stride, laughed and replied, “It`s all good, we`re on excellent terms!”
The fan followed up, “So that was a good pick, honestly?”
Dimitrov, still smiling, confirmed, “It`s a great pick. Great pick.”
Dimitrov and Sharapova were in a relationship from 2012 to 2015.
After their split in July 2015, Dimitrov began dating singer Nicole Scherzinger a few months later, a relationship that lasted until 2019.
Maria Sharapova retired from professional tennis after the 2020 Australian Open.
Sharapova, 37, has been dating British businessman Alexander Gilkes since 2018, and they welcomed their first child in July 2022.
MIAMI HEAT
Grigor Dimitrov has been performing strongly at the Miami Open.
He has defeated Fedrico Cina, Karen Khachanov, Brandon Nakashima, and Francisco Cerundolo to advance to the semi-finals.
After his victory over Cerundolo on Wednesday, Dimitrov felt unwell due to the heat and was assisted off the court.
Dimitrov is set to compete against Novak Djokovic later on Friday for a spot in the final.
