Auston Matthews Addresses His Future with the Toronto Maple Leafs

NHL news

When questioned about his future with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Auston Matthews acknowledged the ongoing speculation but emphasized his focus on the present.

Responding to inquiries about his long-term prospects with the franchise, Matthews stated, “I can’t predict the future.” He highlighted the pending management changes as a significant factor, indicating that he’s waiting to see the direction the team will take. “I don’t really know. I think that’s kind of like I said, I can’t really predict the future,” he added.

When pressed on whether he personally wants to remain with the Leafs or if he would dismiss suggestions of him not being there for the remainder of his contract, Matthews deflected the direct question, stating, “I think all that stuff. I mean, there’s always noise and there’s always chatter. I think personally, you know, I really don’t pay attention all of that. I just focus on myself, focus on this team and trying to be a part of the solution.”

Speculation suggests that Matthews, similar to Quinn Hughes’ situation last year, is waiting to see a clear direction and plan from the team’s new leadership before committing to his future.

Regarding the possibility of a one-year retool, Matthews expressed uncertainty, stating, “I don’t know. I don’t know what that means. I think you have to have a more clear understanding of what that means — retool, rebuild, whatever that is. That’s something that’s going to be up to management.”
