Henri Cochet, a remarkable figure in tennis history, was born in Lyon in 1901. His early introduction to the sport was facilitated by his father’s role at a local tennis club. From the age of eight, young Henri began honing his skills, often practicing with friends whenever the courts were available. His competitive journey truly began in 1920, marked by his initial tournament victories. He quickly rose to prominence the following year, achieving widespread fame when, as a virtual unknown in the capital, he surprisingly triumphed at the Paris Indoor National competition.
