Alexander Volkanovski has reclaimed his UFC featherweight championship after a hard-fought victory against Diego Lopes at UFC 314. The match went the distance, with Volkanovski securing a decision win, but not without facing significant challenges. He endured a knockdown in the second round and a persistent effort from Lopes throughout the fight. Ultimately, Volkanovski`s performance earned him the vacant title, marking his second time as a UFC champion.
According to Volkanovski`s head coach, Joe Lopez, there`s concern about a potential hand injury sustained early in the fight. This injury could potentially sideline Volkanovski for a period. Lopez mentioned in an interview with Submission Radio that Volkanovski reported hand discomfort after the fight, and they are planning an X-ray to assess for a possible fracture.
“He might have broken his hand,” Lopez stated. “We`re going to need to get an X-ray. He definitely hurt his hand.” Lopez couldn`t pinpoint the exact moment the discomfort started but indicated it must have been significant for Volkanovski to mention it. Despite this concern, Lopez expressed relief that the intense battle didn`t result in more severe health consequences for his fighter.
“It happened earlier in the fight, I believe,” Lopez recounted. “Alex didn`t mention anything during the fight; it was only afterwards when he said, `I think I busted my hand.` I can`t recall the exact round.” He added that Volkanovski is also dealing with foot soreness and general aches typical after a five-round fight.
With Volkanovski back at the top and Ilia Topuria`s move to the lightweight division, the featherweight scene is open for new contenders. Lopez mentioned potential future opponents, emphasizing Volkanovski`s strong desire for a rematch with Topuria to avenge his prior knockout loss at UFC 298.
“It`s not solely our decision,” Lopez explained. “It depends on Ilia and the UFC. I`m sure the UFC would be interested in that rematch, given the attention it would draw, especially after Volk`s recent performance. I know for a fact Volk really wants that fight back. It`s a matter of pride – feeling like you had something and lost it, and wanting to reclaim it. But ultimately, it`s up to Ilia and the decision-makers.”
A Volkanovski-Topuria rematch is unlikely to be scheduled immediately, especially with other deserving contenders in line. Movsar Evloev, undefeated, is waiting for his title opportunity, and Jean Silva emerged as another potential challenger after his win at UFC 314 against Bryce Mitchell.
Lopez addressed both potential matchups. “Realistically, Evloev deserves the shot, but he wasn`t mentioned at all during the press conference,” Lopez noted. “There was no discussion about him; everyone was talking about Yair Rodriguez and others. It`s somewhat unfortunate. I guess he`s not considered very exciting and doesn`t generate much hype, but he`s undefeated and on a winning streak. If anyone deserves a title shot, it`s him, but it`s up to those in charge.”
Regarding Silva, Lopez commented, “He`s definitely going to be a contender in the future. He`s probably a couple more fights away from being in title contention, but he`s on a good run. He`s also a character, a very respectful guy. Though, maybe a bit quirky,” Lopez added jokingly.
