Both Alex Perez and Steve Erceg find themselves in urgent need of a victory in the competitive flyweight division.
The Ultimate Fighting Championship recently confirmed that these two experienced contenders are scheduled to clash at UFC Vegas 109, set to take place on August 9th. This event will be headlined by a middleweight bout between Roman Dolidze and Anthony Hernandez, which was previously reported and is now officially confirmed.
Despite holding respectable positions within the top 15 of the MMA Fighting Global Rankings – with Perez at number 10 and Erceg at number 12 – both athletes, who have previously contended for a UFC title, are currently struggling with their form and seeking to regain momentum.
Alex Perez (25-9) has secured only a single win in his last five outings. He managed to break a three-fight losing skid, which included a defeat to then-champion Deiveson Figueiredo at UFC 255, with a notable knockout victory over Matheus Nicolau. However, his difficulties persisted when he suffered a knee injury during his fight against Tatsura Taira in June 2024, resulting in another loss.
Similarly, Steve Erceg (12-4) is also navigating a losing streak that began following his challenge for the flyweight championship. The skilled Australian fighter lost a closely contested decision to the reigning champion, Alexandra Pantoja, at UFC 301. He then subsequently dropped his next two bouts against Kai Kara-France and Brandon Moreno.
